Museum of the Pacific War (Fredericksburg, TX) – March 2011

Yeah, the same opening paragraph you’ve read before.  Some of these pictures were posted originally with the travel blog write-up (original link below).  Now instead of a select few, I’m sharing just about all the pictures.  Some blurry or bad shots were removed, as well as some with others who would appreciate not having their pictures posted again.  Please be sure to visit the original blog link for more details of the original visit.

The last time we were in the area this was still being built, so it was nice to be able to go into see the exhibits.  There aren’t as many pictures here as there could’ve been, as I was spending a lot of time reading and absorbing the exhibits … which was what you should be doing when in a museum.  Starting with info on the events which lead up to the December 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, there’s various bits about the equipment and tactics used in the various campaigns as the Allies “island-hopped” towards Japan.  One of the things I liked was showing how things were on the homefront, like the bit about the American auto manufacturers retooling from building cars and trucks to cranking out tanks and planes.  When you’re in the area, put this on your “must see” list.

A Visit to Kerrville (Kerrville, TX) – March 2011

Yeah, the same opening paragraph you’ve read before.  Some of these pictures were posted originally with the travel blog write-up (original link below).  Now instead of a select few, I’m sharing just about all the pictures.  Some blurry or bad shots were removed, as well as some with others who would appreciate not having their pictures posted again.  Please be sure to visit the original blog link for more details of the original visit.

On this trip down to visit me, my parents wanted to see something they hadn’t seen yet.  Since we were planning on going to Fredericksburg again, we figured we’d go a little farther west to Kerrville.  Mum said that she wanted to look at the area to see if this was a place she’d consider buying “retirement property” out there.  I let her know it was quite a drive out there, and other than nice natural spaces there didn’t appear to be much there.  Mum did agree that it was pretty out there, but since it was far from where I lived, not the place she’d consider moving to.  I told her if she wanted to buy “retirement property,” I suggested Florida so I could come and visit them there.

InnerSpace Caverns (Georgetown, TX) – August 2010

Yeah, the same opening paragraph you’ve read before.  Some of these pictures were posted originally with the travel blog write-up (original link below).  Now instead of a select few, I’m sharing just about all the pictures.  Some blurry or bad shots were removed, as well as some with others who would appreciate not having their pictures posted again.  Please be sure to visit the original blog link for more details of the original visit.

I think this was my fourth visit to InnerSpace Caverns, and no, nothing had changed.  >grin<  This was a living cave, so the formations were still in the process of growing, so you couldn’t touch them.  The oils secreted by the human hand would eventually stop that from happening if enough people touched it.  Thus, better off not to have anyone touch it to extend the life of the formations.

The cave system was last open to the outside some 10,000 years ago when a few Ice Age animals happened to fall in.  After that it, probably due to tectonic activity, the opening was closed up.  As there were no entrances to the outside, the native population nor the European settlers had any clue of its existence.  The story of how this was discovered by chance in the 1960’s was great to hear, and I recommend going to the caves to immerse yourself in the experience.
