Rosenberg Library & Drug Store (Galveston, TX) – September 2013

While we were in Galveston, we decided to even check out the small stuff, as anything could be potentially interesting.  The Rosenberg Library had a small museum on the second floor which had bits of local history.  It didn’t take more than a half-hour to look through it, but it was still nice to see.  The historic tour had mentioned the Star Drug Store, built in 1886, so we decided to scope that out as well.  It was fun to sit in a 1950’s-style establishment to get some fountain sodas.  Sometimes these little experiences are fun too, so don’t forget those.

Historic Galveston Tour (Galveston, TX) – September 2013

Some cities have tours of their “historic areas.”  Some of those tours are you driving and reading a brochure, and other ones you got a person sitting with you explaining what was what.  (And some cities, the “historical areas” are that extensive and/or interesting.)  For Galveston, the tour was placing you on a large golf-cart and having the driver tell you about each of the many available items.

There was a trend in the city to carve up old tree stumps into art after Alicia hit in 1983.  Most fared pretty well through the years, although the mermaid had been damaged by the then-recent Hurricane Ike.  The pictures of the Stork Club were interesting because on the column out in front of the establishment were signs marking flood heights of various hurricanes through the years.

One of the other great things to see on this tour were the houses.  But if you’re ever in a city which has a historical tour, be sure to take it, as you never know what you’ll learn.

Ocean Star Oil Drilling Museum (Galveston, TX) – September 2013

This was one of the items which Dad thought would be interesting.  I’ll admit this wouldn’t be my first choice to visit, but I’m game for something new.  This ended up being far more informative than I guessed.  There was quite a bit of information on not only the history of off-shore oil drilling, but how it was done as well.  Still was a good thing to check out.
