My Mum took these pictures. Yeah, sure it’s always nice to hike up a mountain, but in the case of Whiteface Mountain you can drive up the backside (opposite where the ski slopes are). The highway is only open in the warmer months, and within a span of five miles rises over 2300 feet. Whiteface itself is over 4800 feet. There’s a castle at the top which gives you a good place to grab a bite to eat after checking out all those awesome views of the Adirondack Park. It’s worth the drive.

High Falls Gorge (Wilmington, NY) – October 2008
My Mum took these pictures. If you’re visiting the Lake Placid region, be sure to make a trip to nearby Wilmington to see High Falls Gorge. You pass right by it as you’re going to Olympic venues, so there’s no reason not to stop. Twenty-two acres of waterfalls are a sight to see. The main attraction is the gorge, which you can see thanks to the handy walkway. The tour of the walkway will take you about an hour, but don’t rush through it so you can soak in the view. And of course the Autumn foliage of the Adirondack Mountains which surround you are always great to see.

Olympic Museum (Lake Placid, NY) – October 2008
My Mum took these pictures. The following is just a fraction of the interesting stuff you could see at the Olympic Museum. The main items featured are the two ice rinks, one which hosted the 1980 “Miracle on Ice” and the other was the rink used when Lake Placid hosted the Olympics in 1932. There’s much much more to see here so you go and visit.

Village of Lake Placid (Lake Placid, NY) – October 2008
My Mum took these pictures. Lake Placid is the name of the village which is around Mirror Lake, and Autumn is a great time to visit the area. The village has many small shops and restaurants to check out, but come for the foliage. This quaint hamlet with a population of about 2000 people hosted two Winter Olympic games, and continues to host other sporting events (most winter-oriented). So while those are great to see, it’s nice to visit the area when those things aren’t going on so you can enjoy the natural beauty of the lake and the Adirondack Mountains.
