Chisholm Trail Park (Round Rock, TX) – March 2011

 Since we ended up spending the day revisiting places, this was a good one for a brief stop-over.  It hadn’t been that long since I’d last taken them here (a couple years), but it was nice to see the parts of the Chisholm Trail Park.  The water level was a little bit lower since the last time we were here, so we were able to see more of the actual “round rock” that the city was named after.  People I know who’ve lived in this city all their lives didn’t even know about this hidden gem.  It’s good to find things like this to visit.

Mansfield Dam (Travis County, TX) – March 2011

 This was one of the first places I visited when I moved to Austin in 2002, and I’ve gone back frequently (or at least driven by).  The water level was high enough to actually be going over the dam to create some great mist when I first saw it.  It hasn’t been like that since.  Mansfield Dam was also one of the first places I took Mum & Dad when they came down on the first visit, so it was nice to do a “re-visit.”

 On the first visit we just hung around the parking area next to the dam.  This time I wanted us to get some elevation to be able to see how the water level of the lake had gone down.  A short distance away, up on a hill, was Steiner Ranch Steakhouse, so we drove up there.  Technically they weren’t open yet, but they allowed us to hang on the patio to be able to get a view of the area.

Museum of the Pacific War (Fredericksburg, TX) – March 2011

 The last time we were in the area this was still being built, so it was nice to be able to go into see the exhibits.  There aren’t as many pictures here as there could’ve been, as I was spending a lot of time reading and absorbing the exhibits … which was what you should be doing when in a museum.  Starting with info on the events which lead up to the December 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, there’s various bits about the equipment and tactics used in the various campaigns as the Allies “island-hopped” towards Japan.  One of the things I liked was showing how things were on the homefront, like the bit about the American auto manufacturers retooling from building cars and trucks to cranking out tanks and planes.  When you’re in the area, put this on your “must see” list.

A Visit to Kerrville (Kerrville, TX) – March 2011

 On this trip down to visit me, my parents wanted to see something they hadn’t seen yet.  Since we were planning on going to Fredericksburg again, we figured we’d go a little farther west to Kerrville.  Mum said that she wanted to look at the area to see if this was a place she’d consider buying “retirement property” out there.  I let her know it was quite a drive out there, and other than nice natural spaces there didn’t appear to be much there.  Mum did agree that it was pretty out there, but since it was far from where I lived, not the place she’d consider moving to.  I told her if she wanted to buy “retirement property,” I suggested Florida so I could come and visit them there.
