Places Around Placid (Adirondack Park, NY) – June 2011

 Since we were in the vicinity, and this was heading towards the main destination, we checked out various places around Lake Placid.  After driving up the backside of Whiteface Mountain, we pulled into the front to see where the ski trails were.  Had I more time, I probably would’ve walked to the top just to say I did it.  And then it was just seeing nice scenery of the Adirondack Park as we neared our destination.

 We saw the sky jumps, which indecently I recall visiting these in the late 70’s when they were still being built.  They didn’t look like much, but you never usually see them from the bottom or side.  Then as you pull into town, out in the middle of a field was the Olympic Torch which was lit for the 1980 games.  For those who were alive when this event happened here, it was very meaningful.  I was always curious to know what the younger generation thought of this revered place.  Still, if you ever in reasonable driving distance of this, this was a “must see” visit.

A Foggy Day on Top of Whiteface Mountain (Wilmington, NY) – June 2011

 As it was a clear day at the lower elevation, but when we got to the top of Whiteface Mountain it had become very foggy.  That cut down on the visibility.  I was really hoping to capture some pictures which really showed the distance of how far you could view from the top.  Driving up the mountain requires you to go up the Veteran’s Memorial Highway, and there was a nice lodge at the top.  From there you could get a little higher either via a small elevator within the mountain, or by some stairs up the exterior.  You know I went for the stairs.

 You see a couple pictures of me holding a magazine.  That was Where When How, which was published by the Turks & Caicos Islands tourism board.  It was a contest to have your picture taken with the magazine in a “far away” location to get a free subscription.  One of the pictures here got me my third free subscription.  While the views I could see were great, the highlight of the trip was spending the time with my parents.

A Drive-Up Whiteface Mountain (Wilmington, NY) – June 2011

 There’s an old ideal about “being a tourist in the city where you live,” as you get to experience things perhaps you haven’t seen.  That also applies for when you come back to an area where you used to live.  There’s always sights to see when you’re there, but you end up doing other shit so you never end up going to them.  So when I had the opportunity to come back to my old stomping grounds, I wanted to visit places I haven’t been to before, or it had been a while since I’d been to them.

 My last visit to Whiteface Mountain in the Adirondack Park was circa 2000.  I remember driving up to the top and having my picture taken by the elevation sign, but that was about it.  That was also in the “film camera” days, so I didn’t take a lot of pictures.  On this trip, I wanted to capture the majesty of the mountains.  Sure enough, it decided to be foggy as shit that day.  You can see by the pictures it was partly cloudy when we started on this trip, and it just got foggy later.  You do get to see some of the Adirondack Park from these pictures, but not the full extent.
