Space Center Houston – Second-Half (Houston, TX) – September 2013

Here are the second-half of the pictures from here.  Laying on its side outside is the last remaining Saturn V rocket.  The only one which was never used.  It used to open to the outdoors, but not long before we visited a building was (smartly) constructed around it to help protect it.  The rocket was broken up in pieces so you could get a look at the interior.  The pilot capsule is the only part that doesn’t have the nice white paint job, as that was actually used in one of the Apollo missions.

One of the Saturn V rockets was repurposed to become Skylab.  There’s a mockup of it you can go inside to see what it looked like.  Lots of unused space, but that was pretty much all of the tin can the astronauts existed in.  Velcro wasn’t a thing yet, so you can see the weird wedges on the bottom of the shoes the astronauts wore, which would slot into grooves to keep them stable.

There was just so much to see here, and was highly recommended if you’re in the area.
