Yeah, the same opening paragraph you’ve read before. Some of these pictures were posted originally
with the travel blog write-up (original link below). Now instead of a select few, I’m sharing just
about all the pictures. Some blurry or
bad shots were removed, as well as some with others who would appreciate not
having their pictures posted again.
Please be sure to visit the original blog link for more details of the
original visit.
In the winter of 1980, the world descended on this small mountain
community for the second time in its history, and oh what history was made
then. The museum dedicated to the two
Winter Olympics which were held in Lake Placid is a great place to learn all
those answers. Of course, there’s quite
a bit about the 1932 games (which was the third Winter Olympics) in modern
history, plus there’s some interesting artifacts about the games which came
after this.
A display of the various torches used in different games gave a
sense of that history, as well as triumphs (like the Jamaican Bobsled Team) and
things about the 1936 and 1972 German Olympics.
The main stuff here dealt of course with the 1980 events. I focused my attention to all the
hockey-related stuff, as it’s my favorite sport, and it was the real miracle of
the game. There’s so much there, I
strongly suggest you go and see it all for yourself.
Part of the tour was getting to see the 1980 arena where the
“Miracle on Ice” took place, as well as the 1932 ice rink. Both are still used today for practice and
other events. Years earlier I’d watched
a qualifying match on the 1980 rink of the US Women’s Ice Hockey team. There’s so much here, it’s a great way to
spend an afternoon.
