Places Around Whitehall (Whitehall, NY) – July 2013

I know you’ve seen this standard opening before.  But I just have to note that some of these pictures were posted originally with the travel blog write-up (original link below).  Now instead of a select few, I’m sharing just about all the pictures.  Please be sure to visit the original blog link for more details of the original visit.

The original blog didn’t go into much detail about the town of Whitehall, and there’ll be a little more here.  The Champlain Canal goes through here, which was once the industrial link of the town to the outside world.  The ancestral home of the person who founded the settlement was known as Skeene Manor today, and overlooks the area from a hill.  Plus there’s the hull of the U.S.S. Ticonderoga which was sunk in 1814.  And there’s a lot local lore about Bigfoot being in the area.  My love of cryptozoology aside, it was probably some unwashed unshaven mountain men who stumbled upon some local drunks.  Not sure if the Bigfoot lore predates the European settlers.
